WCDE NATIONALS 2013! (LAS VEGAS)

Nationals was back to Las Vegas again this year - we were super excited about it because Las Vegas is more fun, cheaper and WCDE (West Coast Dance Explosion) is way better than the crap we did last year in Palm Springs.

We carpooled Monday on the way up there with the Oronas. Emma had a ton of fun hanging out with these fun girls and acting like she was a sister with them!
Tuesday was competition day! It was so nice to get it all done and over with in one day! Woo hoo! The girls did good, but not there best, their mojo was off for sure, but at least Emma looked great :)

Pre-performace pep talk
lovely lu lu lemon prop crew!
 awards!
Wednesday - Friday was convention days...

Emma's new convention outfit...
tired mommy, not quite ready for the day yet!
WCDE assistant (Amy Yakima) who is currently on SYTYCD
exhausted dancers who all insisted on sleeping together on the blow up matress
After they went to sleep with a responsible older dancer watching them, the moms might have gone out clubbing....maybe....perhaps....

getting ready....

The next night we took the girls to ride the New York New York roller coaster after we ate dinner at Sugar and then we took a limo back to the Mirage...the girls thought the whole night was the best!

Friday night was the closing show Gala. The first year Emma danced in the gala, but we didn't buy the $95 a person plate tickets and we just hung out and did our own thing and then went and danced. This year we since they made it to the gala again we decided to buy the tickets and eat and watch the show. Emma thought it was  so awesome how fancy everything was and she loved getting all dressed up. It was great to say we did it, but I don't think I would buy a ticket again...I'm good!
City Lights ended up with 5th place overall. We were proud of them and I am happy to never see that dance again :)

Shaelon and Emma - Sassy sisters
 Shaelon's gift to Emma
Saturday we woke up and got the heck out of Vegas - See ya next year! Me and Emma couldn't wait to get home to our boys who we missed!!

FARM CAMP!

While Emma and I were Vegas and Jared was in Oregon, my parents watched the boys for us that whole week. I wanted to keep the boys busy so luckily we found 2 camps for them to go to, plus Summer Movie Fun, plus 2 nights for football practice and 1 night for a game - all that made for some happy grandparents because the boys were getting their exercise and getting worn out!

On the first day of camp I was able to drop them off just before I headed off to Vegas and we said our goodbyes. They were most excited to go! Eli went the year before and told the twins all about it so they were pumped! Sadly, because I was out of town I don't have a lot of details of everything they did, but I was able to get some fun pictures of the boys! They are already excited for next year, Thanks Varvel Poplar Farms!

Face Painting - Eli was a horse and Tyson was a chicken - Tyler wasn't having any part of the face painting
Good bye my buddies! Be good and have fun!
 Feeding baby goats
 holding a chicken
watching a video on something important...
 Learning something....
 feeding chickens
 The boys farm group
I know for sure they also had a water day, and learned about flowers, brought home stuff to plant flowers, made scare crows and that's about all the info I have other than the boys loved it. They would head straight from farm camp to Values camp and basically they made crafts there and played in the splash pad - thanks Halls!

FOURTH OF JULY!

Fourth of July this year was different, but still a great day! Jared is on his way to Oregon and made a pit stop at Bryant's house for the 4th and this morning got up and ran the Freedom Run 10k. He sent me some pictures and they made me sad that I missed out on such a beautiful run. He beat his brother and that's all that mattered to me (ha ha, jk Bryant!)

After the race was over they went and watched the parade

While Jared was out having fun with his family, we were home slaving away...ok so I was slaving away cleaning the house and the kids were having a dance party and playing together so we could get things done for our fun later. After the work was all done we headed out to go see Despicable Me 2...we showed up an hour early and it was sold out, but bought tickets for the show 1 hour and 40 minutes later and were still stuck in the second line. The kids did really well playing games on phones and then we played Simon Says in line...it may have gotten a little out of control and we ran into a few people in line, but I couldn't care less - when Simon says shake your butt, you gotta do it!

Cause pimpin' ain't easy!

After the movies we went to Rudy and Polly's house for a BBQ and swimming. After we finished up eating and swimming for 2 hours we headed out to find some fireworks to watch on the side of the road.
Tyler, Payton, Chiara, Tyson and Eli
We all had a fabulous time, it couldn't have been more perfect unless we could have all been together! Happy 4th of July party toes!
I am so grateful for the freedoms in which this country provides for me and for all those who have fought or our fighting for our freedoms. Happy Birthday America!

OREGON THE 4TH TIME AROUND!

Well Jared left for his 4th time to Oregon. This time he will only be gone for 3 months so that is good...bad part is he will come home once in 2 1/2 weeks and then we won't see him for 5 weeks and then we won't see him until he comes home. I am hoping that with all my kids being in school this year (tear) that it will help the time to go by faster and I can have my little breaks while they are away learning...we will see how my master plan works out - I might not even need my pepsi IV drip, ha ha!

We have been able to spend a lot of time with daddy the last few days before he left and that was good to make those memories.

This time I think has been the hardest so far for him to leave, with the kids being older they understand more that their dad is leaving and not coming back for a while. Last time the twins were 2 1/2 and Eli just turned 4 so give them a piece of candy and the sadness is gone - that doesn't quite work anymore.

The night before he left we said a family prayer together and sweet little Eli had tears during the prayer. Jared took all the kids to bed and then when he was done he came out to the kitchen to help me finish tidying things up. Eli came out of bed with his Mater stuffed toy and his Lightning McQueen stuffed toy. He held them both up and looked at Jared and asked him in the sweetest, softest, holding back tears voice and said, "can you take one and I will have one?" So of course Jared took one and then took Eli back to bed and tucked him in again.

Moments later, Emma came into Eli's room to give Jared a stuffed animal too.

Not to be outdone the twins of course hurried and grabbed some to give him also. Jared looked at me with "What in the heck am I supposed to do with all these stuffed animals?" and I just smiled and said, "you have to take them you know!" and then I got to walk away giggling knowing he was going to be hauling around 4 stuffed animals, ha ha!

After the kids were all back in bed, AGAIN....Jared and I went to our room to finish packing, get ready for bed, etc and in the twins come again. They came in 2 more times just needing one more hug from their daddy each time.

It's too bad these kids have such a good daddy - otherwise this wouldn't be so hard!

(Now since no one else is going to brag about me I might as well....day one of Jared being gone: Tyson broke a giant glass bowl at Polly's house and I didn't even yell or beat him, I killed a scorpion in Emma's bath tub, long story short, the garage broke, then I hit, the wheels came off and Eric and I fixed it.....that was a long day for a single mom! I am a rock star, ha ha!)

THE COST OF DANCE!

Here is an article that was posted online and Jared and I liked it so much he wanted it posted on our blog for ourselves...

Cost/benefit Analysis White Paper (thin on numbers) by a Dance Dad Money Manager
By Jeff L.

When Dance Dad Gourmet asked me to contribute to his blog in the expert’s corner, I realized that there is really only one subject in which I could realistically consider myself an expert…money management. You see, I am a Financial Advisor at a large firm. I help my clients to make good decisions about their money. I specialize in investment management, retirement planning, and provider-level retirement plan consulting.

In short, clients come to me with a problem and I help them solve it. Typically, the problem (in some way) centers on turning a smaller amount of money into a larger amount of money over some period of time while accepting some level of risk.

Therefore, I would like to address the issue of the cost of dance and it’s ROI (return on investment). Don’t tune me out; I’m not going to bore you with analytics.

The truth of the matter is that the cost of dance, especially competitive dance, is quite high. Class fees, private lessons, costumes, competition entry fees, travel costs to competition, time off of work, THE DAMN STONES (!!!) etc. All of these costs add up. The further one advances as a dancer, the higher these costs become. Since it is very unlikely that any of these costs will ever be recouped financially, this becomes a cost/benefit analysis of the explicit and opportunity costs of dance.

I’ll take you through the process that I used…
When a new client comes to see me, we try to quantify the goal. It is never as simple as it would seem. Clients never seem to have a clearly defined goal. The same is true of the decision about whether to get (and keep) our daughter involved in dance, or not.
What do we want for our children? What is the goal? If we can’t quantify it, can we at least clearly identify it? I will try, and please realize that I speak only for myself and my wife (a wonderful and devoted dance mom).

We want our children to be involved with something they love to their core. We want them to live it and breathe it if that is what they wish to do. We want them to be their very best selves while they are doing it, and we want them to do this activity surrounded by people who will support them and push them to be more than they ever imagined they could be.

We want them to build discipline, skills, memories, and friends that they will take with them for their whole lives. We want them to learn to be leaders, and we want them to learn to be led.
We want them to learn how to win. And lose… gracefully.

We want them to learn to lift up their teammates, and to lean on them when they, themselves, are not strong.
We want them to do all this in a place that is safe, nurturing, loving, caring, and fun.
Above all, they need to have fun. Even when it is hard.
Wow… not asking for too much, right?

High expectations, I know. Therefore, this activity that we want our children to be involved in is going to require pretty special teachers. These people are going to need to have infinite patience, but they can’t be pushovers. They need to be the best at their craft, but they need to know how to communicate their knowledge to young children in a way that builds the child up… not in a way that makes them scared to fail.
It will require the teacher to love our children.

That is quite a job description.
We were fortunate to have found a place that can provide all of these things for our daughter at her dance studio. She has been dancing since she was three and is now seven. This is her second season of competitive dance and her first as a member of the minis on the top competition team.

I have seen her blossom in the last 12 months from a shy, wonderfully sweet five-year-old who would barely speak above a whisper to those whom she was not familiar with, into a silly, sweet, wonderfully funny seven-year-old who constantly sings opera (she’s doing it right now), and solo dances freestyle in the middle of Noodles & Company to music that only she can hear. Seriously… that just happened at dinner the other night.

She loves her dance family, and we love them, too. We trust completely those entrusted to care for, teach, and lead our daughter. We have met a group of parents that are as devoted to encouraging their children’s dreams as we are, and they are wonderful to be around. They lift us up.

Long winded, I know. It had to be, because the goal could not be easily quantified into a dollars and cents value. Rather, we need to think of the true cost of dance in terms of opportunity cost. If you are not familiar with the concept, opportunity cost is defined as what you would be giving up by making or not making a given decision.

In this cost benefit analysis, I need to weigh the explicit cost in dollars and cents versus all of the growth and potential (as a person, not as a dancer) that I see in my daughter (the opportunity cost). This is not a calculation that can be done on a spreadsheet or a financial calculator, and therefore takes me somewhat out of my comfort zone. This is also not a decision made to grow a smaller amount of money into a larger amount of money over a period of time. For my family, though, this investment is reaping tremendous dividends. The dividends cannot be spent (and if they could be spent, we would likely have to use them to buy MORE DAMN STONES (!!!)).

Instead, this “investment” in dance is building a child who is confident, strong, physically fit, and has a work ethic that would seem impossible for a seven year old to have. Dance is helping to mold her into a child who sticks up for her friends, speaks confidently to grown-ups, and is strong enough to not always follow the crowd if she knows something is wrong.

These are things that are invaluable. These are things that will help her to become the type of person I pray she will be. These are things whose benefits are far more important than their costs.
