FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

It was another bittersweet first day of school. I love my kids in school because I love a routine and I love to have the house to myself to clean...but summers are so short here I always want them to stay home longer and I am sad when they start.

Jared and I, along with both sets of grandparents, fasted for Emma on Sunday so that her first week of high school she could have the strength and energy she needed to make it through the week. She had to get up at 5am for school, start school at 6:30am, right after school she had to stay after for cheer try-outs, then she went to pom try-outs, then she came home and ate for an hour, did her home work and was off to dance try-outs till 9:30pm. Bless her heart. She survived it like a champ though and we are really proud of her.

The first day of school seemed to be going ok until I got a text from her "mom! im in the wrong class - what do i do?" I told her just to walk out. She said she couldn't because she knew people in there. So then I looked up her schedule to see what was going on and bless her heart, she was 30 minutes into the class before she realized she was in the wrong spot. I then tried to call the front office to see if they could nicely call her out of there to try and save her some embarrassment, but they said no and she just needed to get up and leave. Clearly she wasn't going to do this. So she spent her 3rd period sitting in math instead of sitting in biology - in the mean time I am getting a message from school that she is marked absent from biology. After class she went and explained to her math teacher what happened and he was cool and told her she could go to her biology class 4th hour instead since she already sat through his class once. She went over there, but there was no class to be had - it was his lunch hour so she went back to math again. At the end of the day she went to talk to her bio teacher and tell him what had happened and he was fine with it and told her to have me call the office and reverse the absence and then he gave her the papers she needed. The rest of the day was pretty good, all her try-outs went well except she did get stung by a scorpion in dance, but luckily there was a nurse there who helped her wash out the poison, I brought her benadryl and she got an ice pack and the stingy sensation went away, the numbness around her mouth went away and this bite turned out not to be as bad as the first one she got.

The next day I was at home and up popped a message on my phone that Emma was absent from biology again. Surely this had to be a mistake - she knows where her classroom is, but it was block day so her schedule was different, but I figured she is a bright girl, they must just have marked it by mistake or it was leftover from yesterday. I called the office and explained to her and she put me on hold and called the teacher who confirmed she indeed was NOT in class. So then I told her, my daughter isn't responding to my texts, I know she is at school and wouldn't ditch - so then the lady tried her math room, not there either. She told me to keep texting her and as soon as she responds to tell her she needed to go to the office right away and they would help her.

After trying to reach her and her not responding, I texted her friend and she didn't know where she was either, I can see Emma isnt even reading my messages and her phone is going straight to voicemail so I decided to call the office again and ask them to call each of her classrooms. The lady told me she called all of her classrooms, even seminary and she wasn't there, the only place they didn't call was dance because they don't have a phone and we both laughed and hoped she wasn't that big of an idiot to go to dance since it is her last class of the day and it's not even lunch time yet.  They even checked the counselors office and the nurses office. Then the lady asked me how Emma was doing and if she had a good first day yesterday - and I told her no no - it's nothing like that - she is good and happy and was excited to come to school.  She then assured me they haven't lost a kid in 10 years and they weren't going to lose her and to keep trying her on her phone. Finally I decided that in 20 more minutes, I was going to go down to the school myself and look for her - I started to panic that maybe the scorpion bite and finally done something to her and she was passed out in a bathroom somewhere and no one knew.

Finally the phone rang and it was the school. In a very serious voice, they told me they found her...I asked if she had passed out in the bathroom from a scorpion bite and she said no that they even had the security sweep all the bathrooms for her. She was sitting in her biology class where she belonged. WHAT?!?!?!?!? Yep - that's right. Because she had missed the first day of class she didn't know they had assigned seats so when she got to class she went in and sat by her friend so her seat was now empty. I guess the teacher takes roll by who is in their seat and even when the office called to ask for her he didn't even ask out loud if she was in there he just said no. Later in class they had to hand in papers with their names on it and then her paper got passed up and he saw her name and realized she was in there so he called to report she was there. The lady on the phone told me, "I know this is very inappropriate for me to say, but I want to ring his neck, we have a lot of people looking for her and we were all starting to get worried!"

Finally Friday came and Emma had all her try-outs. She felt confident about cheer and then went over to pommie try-outs and my friend was one of the judges. Emma was going to get handed a letter after try-outs telling her if she mad pom or not, but she made the decision ahead of time not to open it before dance try-outs because if she didnt' make it - she didn't want to go to dance try-outs all sad. She finally came out to the car and she started crying and told  me she didn't make it - I couldn't understand how she knew if she didn't open her letter. Well, after try-outs she went into the coaches office to thank her for the week and the coaches were so glad she came in and they were hoping she would because they wanted to give her all these compliments and even told her if they had 2 more spots available - she was going to make the team.  My friend even called me and told me the same thing and also said Emma just needed to be more sharp. Her good friend Tatum made pommie and they were hugging and being sad for Emma but happy for Tatum so then I took the girls out to dinner before dance try-outs. While we were going to the car for dinner I started getting texts asking if Emma made cheer and I couldn't find the list so then I told them what Emma's number was and she made freshman cheer! She was soooo excited and so was Tatum - even Tatum's mom called and screamed for her. The girls took off to dance try-outs and ended up staying the night together, got ready in the morning together and then headed off to Perry at 8am for Spirit Line pictures for the football program. I came to pick up the girls when it was over and I saw Emma standing there in her cheer uniform - she was so cute - I got a little emotional for her, thinking about how hard she worked and how much she wanted it and she was able to achieve it. They even cut girls this year from freshman cheer and the squad is so good this year, they are wanting the girls to compete and it will be the first time freshman competes. She also gets to cheer at 2 varisty football games and she is super pumped for those!

The boys had great first days too! Tyler and Tyson are back into the same class again - we decided they both needed to have a good teacher this year for so many reasons so we knew putting them together in Ms. Tibbott's class was perfect and Eli also got the teacher he wanted (she just happens to be on maternity leave until the 2nd quarter, but he is really happy with his sub so far so life is good!). I did forget one little nugget about Tyson's personality - He does NOT like to walk into class late. There have been several examples of this and finally I am realizing and making mental note. The bus was late to school on the first day (no shocker there) so by the time they got off the bus (we are always there waiting for them so we can walk them to class) the first bell was ringing and since I don't know Eli's teacher I told the boys we had to take Eli first, Tyson was upset we weren't going to his class first and I wouldn't let him go without us. We walked Eli to class, took his pic and then hurried over to the twins class - I am friends with their teacher so I know she would be fine with us being a couple minutes late and me taking their pics. Tyson was mortified to be late, and hated every second of it, poor buddy. Don't worry Tyson - mental note made and from now on, I won't let you be late to class! XOXOXO

Saturday before school started Eli had a big baseball team try-out. He was trying out for the Shane Loux School of Baseball. They had 30 boys come out to the team and they only wanted 12 (and some of those spots were already filled by coaches sons). Eli made it past the first round and then 20 of them had try-outs Thursday the first week of school. He even wrote "Rounders" on school papers and came home every day asking if we had heard if he made the team or not. Thursday came and we still didn't know. They did call 3 boys that night and cut 3 boys. The coaches stayed up for hours that night trying to figure out which 3 from that they were going to drop. We got an email letting us know it was going to be a few more days to decided. Finally Saturday afternoon came, Eli was let go. We were bummed. He was bummed. The coach had Eli on his final roster, but then triplets showed up and took his spot. Poor kid. The coach recommended Eli to try out for this other team, Ignite, by Matt Palmer - One of Shane's buddies from the MLB. Eli went to that try-out the next week and Matt announced at the end of the try-out he would call everyone the next day and let them know the results if they made the team or not. That night while everyone was leaving, Jared had to stay to fill out paperwork he hadn't filled out yet and before he was even done the coach came up and offered Eli a spot on the team, right there. Eli's face lit up like it does when he is happy and then Jared and him went a got a treat to celebrate before heading home!

It was a crazy ride that first week of school with a lot of ups and downs, and even though not everything went the way we wanted it to, we learned a lot, grew a lot, spoke to Hevenly Father a lot that week and in the end we know all is how it's supposed to be and we are grateful for everything!
